Agent plugins, MCP server and API beta

Paperpile is introducing new AI-native integrations that let you interact with Paperpile from a variety of popular agent harnesses.

Note: The Paperpile API, MCP server and agent plugin are currently in limited public beta. Contact support@paperpile.com to request access.

We plan to expand access to all Paperpile subscribers in the coming weeks.

What is the Paperpile agent plugin?

The agent plugin lets you use AI products like Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini to interact with your Paperpile library. You can:

  • Find papers and preprints, with advanced search features
  • Save papers to your library, retrieve PDFs automatically
  • Search and analyze full-text papers in your library
  • Summarize, highlight quotes, synthesize across many papers

The /welcome command from Paperpile’s plugin provides an overview of capabilities:

Get started

1. Enroll in the beta

You must be enrolled in the beta program by a Paperpile staff or admin.

The MCP and API servers will only work with accounts that have been onboarded to the beta. Contact support@paperpile.com to request or confirm access.

2. Install the Paperpile plugin for your agent

Warning: Until Paperpile Support has confirmed that you have been added to the beta, the instructions below will not work.

We will be adding users as quickly as possible over the coming weeks. We appreciate your patience!

Follow the steps below to install Paperpile for your preferred agent platform:

3. Authorize your agent to access Paperpile

After installation, your agent software should open a new tab to initiate an authorization flow on Paperpile. This is where you can grant the agent access to your Paperpile library:

4. Start using Paperpile in your agent

With the Paperpile plugin installed and authenticated, you can start using Paperpile by talking to your agent.

When you ask a question where searching papers or interacting with your Paperpile library might help, your agent will automatically call Paperpile tools and skills.

Tip: Paperpile comes with several workflows designed to combine the best of your agent and Paperpile’s paper-finding and full-text retrieval capabilities.

Try /find-papers or /deep-library-search to get started, or use /welcome to see a list of all workflows.

Keeping Paperpile up to date

You may occasionally be asked to update your Paperpile plugin to load the latest skills and MCP tool definitions.

  • Claude desktop app: updates are automatically pulled from GitHub.
  • Claude Code: run claude plugin marketplace update paperpile, then claude plugin update paperpile@paperpile.
  • ChatGPT and Codex: run codex plugin marketplace upgrade paperpile, then restart ChatGPT.
  • Antigravity: re-run the curl command above, then restart.

Other tools: REST API, Typescript SDK, MCP server

We are releasing a number of developer-facing APIs and components as part of the new Paperpile platform:

  • REST API covering the majority of actions and requests that can be made through the Paperpile web app.
  • Typescript SDK, making it easy to write scripts that incorporate Paperpile as a source or repository for papers and notes.
  • Paperpile CLI, for streamlined command-line automation
  • MCP server, which powers the agent plugins and may be used standalone by agent tools that don’t support pre-packaged plugins.

Once you are onboarded to the beta, you may generate Paperpile API keys and access all of the above platform components. More documentation is coming soon.
